Restoration - why the expenditure?

People, who don't own an oldtimer, have certainly asked themselves: why should we invest in such a car while we can buy a technically better car - mostly for less money?

And yet there are a lot of people who buy an oldtimer and restore it painfully or leave the restoration to a specialist workshop. The question is: why do they do this? The answer is given by the daily picture on our roads. You see one VW Golf after another, sometimes a VW Passat and Mercedes or BMW, more rarely a Porsche car, comes along. There is not much difference between the shape of the individual brands and models, most of them look alike.

However, the rounded and curved forms of an oldtimer are spectacular and striking among the uniform design. People are reminded of their youth when such oldtimers belonged to the daily picture on our roads. Others are interested in the quite simple and comprehensive technique of the old cars. Because of their do-it-yourself hobby, working with these cars is much easier without the complicated technique of modern vehicles which need a special and a well-equipped workshop.

Many of those vehicles are in a technical state where they would never get a permit for public traffic. Therefore the technique of those cars must be touched up thoroughly, the body de-rusted and repaired. The interior is mostly not in a good shape. Some do-it-yourself workers can repair their car, however the larger part of the oldtimer fans do not have the equipment and the know-how for the repair work.
